CD Projekt Red. This one of the biggest video game developer was created by two teenagers who were selling cracked copies of western video games before the political transformation in Poland. Through a desire to conduct business legitimately Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński began importing games from US retailers and became the first CD-ROM games importers in Poland. After a few years their determination has paid off and in 1994 the CD Project was founded. With only 2000$ they used a friend’s flat as a rent free-office. As the games sell went well the CDP’s founders wondered if they should transform from games distributor to developer. As we know today decision to become a developer was significant. They have decided to create a game series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s „Wiedźmin” books because of its popularity in Poland at that time. In 2003 studio without the knowledge in developing games started creating The Witcher. After a year, thanks to BioWare the game was promoted on Electronic Entertainment Expo. The original 15-person development team expanded to about 100 and finally, In 2007 The Witcher was released and got a lot of positive reviews from players.
The first game of CDP sold very well and the studio decided to create sequel immediately after The Witcher release. They have made their own engine known as REDengine so the game could be ported to other consoles. The creation of the second part took them almost 4 years and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings saw the light of the day.
More than 1.7million copies were sold and the studio received the European Games Award at Gamescom 2012.
After another 4 years, we witnessed an absolute breakthrough in the polish gaming industry. Thanks to the Third part of The Witcher not only good vodka will be associated with Polish but also games. Since 2015 The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt was sold in over 33 million copies and studio won “Developer of the Year” award at The Game Awards 2015.
